Bruce Isaacson, Inaugural Poet Laureate of Clark County, will lead a discussion on the Beat poetry movement of the 1950s & ‘60s. Arguably the last movement of the arts to broadly impact western society, the Beats reinvented poetry to suit the modern experience. How did a movement in poetry end up at the heart of so many new ways of thinking? Bring your ideas and your glasses for reading and lively discussion!Library: Paseo Verde Library Libraries Map
In the 19th & early 20th century, poets like Whitman, Sandburg, Rimbaud, and Langston Hughes changed the entire concept and mission of American poetry. By the time Kenneth Rexroth set the table for the San Francisco Renaissance, America itself was chafing from the industrial era and changing towards new democratic ideals.
This project is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
